Edit | Viewpoint List

VCollab Pro has an option for creating viewpoints. The first user defined viewpoint will be the default viewpoint, when the model is loaded. User can export and import vpt files. vpt file consists of all viewpoints of a user specified viewpath. Extension of vpt files is .vpt.

A view point state may contain the following information

  • Notes

  • Annotation

  • Display mode

  • Probed CAE result labels

  • Pick and move part state

  • Exploded view

  • Measurements

  • Cut Section

  • Legend information

  • Merged dataset view

  • Background with or without Texture image and etc.


  • User can store different types of observations on model as view point states into a new CAX file.

  • User can retrieve all observations in a view point states.

  • Animate path or a walk through model helps user to get more knowledge on model.


Default view paths with default viewpoint states are,

  • Standard Views
    • all standard views front, back, left, right, top, bottom and isometric views are stored.


Viewpoints Panel


Path List of paths added by user
Estimated Time Displays estimated time. User can edit this value.
Elapsed Time Denotes the elapsed time to complete animation of a path.

Context Menu

A drop down menu items will be listed if right mouse click exists.

Add ViewPoint Adds current view to current path.
Rename Viewpoint Allows user to rename viewpoint.
Insert Viewpoint Inserts a viewpoint just before current viewpoint.
Delete Viewpoint Deletes current viewpoint
Update Viewpoint Allows user to change the scene and update the same to existing viewpoint.
Capture Camera Allows user to capture camera view and save it as viewpoint
Animate Path Animates the path.
Stop Stops animation
Slide Show Switches viewpoint animation into slide show mode.
Apply State Toggles between Apply and Remove the state during animation
Loop Animation Enables continuous animation play.
Add Path Adds new viewpath.
Rename path Allows user to rename the viewpath.
Delete path Deletes current path.
Export Image As Exports all viewpoint states as PowerPoint file or as vpt file.
Generate Viewpath Generates view path with various viewpoints for model presentations.
  Presentation 1 - Except focused part or group of parts, all others are in semi transparent mode.
  Presentation 2 - Except focused part or group of parts, all others are in hidden mode.
  CAE Results Viewpoints  - Viewpoints for all CAE results  and its components.
  CAE Viewpoints Settings - pops up settings page.
Import ViewPoints Imports viewpoints from external vpt or cax file or VCollab supported python scripts to run.
Export ViewPoints

This option helps user to export

  • All viewpoints as images into a PPT(*.ppt) file.

  • All viewpoints in a vpt (*.vpt) file.

  • Filtered parts and results into a new cax (*.cax) file.

    • Parts or Geometry and Results available across all viewpoints will be saved into cax.

    • Other parts and results will not be saved.

AddVisibleLabelViewPt... This is applicable only if the selected viewpoint contains CAE probed labels. In the selected viewpoint, labels of which attached positions are not visible in the current view are suppressed. And the suppressed labels are taken to new viewpoint. User has to provide viewpoint name.
  • This option is to interactively modify/split a viewpoint in such a way that multiple viewpoints can be created with visible hotspots.
  • User selects a viewpoint. Then changes the view by using rotate / zoom / section options such that a set of hotspot labels are visible.
  • Then user selects 'Add Visible Label ViewPoint' option. The system will create a new viewpoint with only visible hotspots in this modified view. The remaining hotspots will remain in the original viewpoint.
  • By repeating these steps user can create multiple viewpoints without missing any hotspot.


Edit Mode

Selecting a viewpoint clears current view information. Accidental selection of viewpoint may result into users loss on current scene information. This will prompt user before applying the new viewpoint to scene. This helps user to avoid current view information loss..

Auto Backup

This option helps user to have a back up of viewpoints during creating or updating viewpoints. If user forgets to save viewpoints into cax, user can retrieve the viewpoints created using this option. A vpt file with cax file name will be created and updated. File will be available in %VCOLLAB_TEMP%\VCollab.


View Path Title Provide a title to viewpath
All Results Generates viewpoints for all results.
All Instances Generates viewpoints for all instances.
All Derived Results Generates viewpoints for all derived type results.
Compare Compares two datasets and shows the difference in viewpoints
Generate Click this button to generate viewpoints.

How to create view point states?

  • Load a CAX Model.

  • Add notes through 'Tools | Label/Notes | Add Notes' option

  • Go to 'Edit | Viewpoints' List.

  • Right click on the ' Viewpoints' panel.

  • It pops up context menu.

  • Click 'Add View Point' which pops up 'Add View Path' Dialog if no view path exists.

  • Enter a Path name, say Path1.

  • Click 'OK'. It pops up 'Add View Point' dialog.

  • Enter a view point name, say ViewPoint-01 .

  • The current view with the Notes will be stored in the name ViewPoint-01. Path name and view point name will be displayed.

  • Follow the above steps to create more view points with different states.

  • The Viewpoints can be played as an animation, if multiple viewpoints are created

  • Right Click on 'Viewpoints Panel'.

  • Click Animate path. It will start animation.

How to retrieve a view point state?

  • Click on Viewpoints tab.

  • Click on a view point and notice that stored viewpoint state is retrieved and applied on viewer.

  • Below is a movie, which shows different viewpoint states with lots of information on each state.

How to navigate viewpoints?

User can navigate viewpoints in three ways.

  • Using Viewpoints panel in the left span,

    • Click on a viewpoint in the list and view,

    • Move the viewpoint animation slider,

    • Click previous and next icons in the viewpoint animation control icons


  • Using Right click context menu items,

    • Click inside the viewer using right mouse button.

    • It drops down a context menu

    • Click Viewpoints | Next View  or Viewpoints | Previous View


  • Using Navigation icons in toolbar,

    • Click Previous and Next icons in the toolbar to browse viewpoints.


  • Using Navigation icons located at rightmost bottom corner of the viewer window.,

    • Click Previous and Next icons available inside the viewer to view slides or viewpoints.

How to export all viewpoint states as images into PowerPoint?

  • Click right mouse button to pop up viewpoints context menu.

  • Click Export Image As | Power Point....

  • It pops up save file browser dialog.

  • Enter a file name.

  • Click Save, which pops up a dialog.

  • It asks for template.

  • Click Yes to provide a template.

  • Click No to continue without template.

  • Now all the viewpoint states are inserted as images into Power Point.

  • First slide is left as empty page for title of the presentation if template is provided as shown below.

How to export and import viewpoints?

  • Click right mouse button inside the viewpoints panel.

  • Select Export Viewpoints option from dropdown context menu.

  • It pops up file browser dialog.

  • Select file type as .vpt to store viewpoints

  • Select file type as .ppt to store viewpoints states into ppt image slides.

  • Click Save.

  • Click Import viewpoints option from the context menu.

  • It pops up file browser dialog.

  • Select any .CAX or .vpt file to import view points.

  • Click Open and notice that view paths are imported.
